At Odds with Yourself

by Santyn on Mar.31, 2009, under Random

Pike recently made a tweet that got me to thinking.

  • “I find it amusing that I like resto druids so much and yet IRL I am allergic to every single tree that I was tested for.”

After reading that I began to wonder how often an in game character that you create is at odds with who you are in real life?

Allow me to explain with myself as an example.

  • Hunter:If you have ever read the class description you will know that it is all about the flawless teaming of a Hunter and his pet. You dedicate yourself to training your pet to be an extension of yourself. Yeah, definitely not me IRL. I am lucky that I was able to housebreak my dogs. Forget about any further training. They would be more likely to lick an intruder to death than protect me.
  • Shaman: Shamanism is a very real thing. It has deep roots in many cultures and religions throughout the world. The in game Shaman borrows many ideas from these real life examples. I absolutely love this class (almost as much as I love Hunters). IRL though, I am about as far from a religious person as you can get. The idea of Shamanism is not even part of the culture that I was brought up in. Yet I continue to find myself drawn t the class.

How about you? Do your characters represent you? A part of you that you are afraid to show the rest of the world? Or maybe even the complete opposite of who you are?

Hunter actually meshes surprisingly well with me– I have this knack for training and dealing with animals from what various people have told me, and I’ve basically always been that way. I work at a pet store so I can tell you what basically every type of exotic animal eats and how they need to be cared for, heck, I can even “Wing Clip” a bird’s wings in real life =P

… well im at odds with my character then … im not dead, i generally cant train pets (let alone a dead one), and i usually prefer to step back and deal with tactics and have a view of the whole situation than rush in.

man, its easy to contrast to dks.

Hunter. I have a degree in Biology w/ emphasis on zoology. I am still mourning the death of my beloved 9 year old doggie-soul mate last year. But I’m working on training/bonding with my new little girl, a border collie who thinks she’s smarter than me (and might be right). Having that extension of “consciousness” into an animal companion that like in WoW goes back and forth checking on you, then back out, checking back, etc. feels so natural now that I feel empty without it. And training an animal so that it responds to you and only you and understands what you want is tedious/exhausting/frustrating but ultimately an amazing experience. Reminds you how subtle communication can be.

So, nope, not at odds at all.

Leveling characters without pets feels lonely, and those wierd void walkers, imps and DK ghouls just don’t do it for me like a cat or a wolf. The demon with the whip would be worth a try, though…
